Knowing The Difference
When my mother lived with us a few years ago I had the opportunity to learn almost everything there was to know about traditional Medicare and Medigap supplement insurance. I found out that I had been confused for many years when it comes to this type of coverage and the enrollment guidelines. I thought that the term “open enrollment” encompassed all supplemental insurance so I was very aggressive with my mother when November would roll around and I would push her to make decisions with regard to her supplemental insurance. We would always have a heated discussion because she would tell me that that did not pertain to her. In all actuality she was correct, because she was not going to enroll in a Medicare advantage plan which has an enrollment period of approximately 8 weeks. She was enrolled in a supplement plan which was made available to her within a six-month period of when she turned 65.
Once I learned the difference between the two I was able to help her make a decision with regard to which insurance company offered the lowest premium rates for the particular plan that she was interested in. Her choice was to go with United healthcare supplemental insurance. While all the plans have the exact same coverage from carrier to carrier, the company she chose to go with had the cheapest premium rate it would fit into her budget and since she was on a fixed income this made perfect sense. When I did the research for Medicare supplements I found that this coverage was going to save her hundreds of dollars in the long run because of all the medical care that she required. My mom has since passed, but during the last years of her life Medicare gap insurance was able to fill in niche that was needed so that she was not so financially strapped.
As I approach my retirement years I now know what I need to do to get a Colorado Medicare supplement plan that will be just right for me and my budget. I will call 1-800-MEDIGAP and get quotes on one of the many plans that are available from a qualified agent that will be able to help me through the process like they did with my mother. If you are looking for coverage for yourself or your parents don’t hesitate to make that important phone call today.
